Old Age Story by Anton Chekhov

Uzelkov, associate creator with the rank of civil member, arrived in his native city, to that he had been invited to revive the church within the site. He had been born within the city, had been in class, had adult up and married in it. However once he got out of the train he scarcely recognized it. Everything was modified. . . . Eighteen years agone once he had captive to Petersburg Campaign the street-boys accustomed catch marmots, for example, on the spot wherever currently the station was standing; now once one drove into the chief street, a edifice of 4 storeys stood facing one; in recent days there was an unsightly gray fence simply there; however nothing—neither fences nor homes —had modified the maximum amount because the individuals. From his enquiries of the edifice waiter Uzelkov learned that over 1/2 the individuals he remembered were dead, reduced to financial condition, forgotten.

"And does one bear in mind Uzelkov?" he asked the recent waiter regarding himself. "Uzelkov the creator UN agency unmarried  his wife? He accustomed have a house in Svirebeyevsky Street . . . you need to bear in mind."

"I don't bear in mind, sir."

"How is it you don't remember? The case created lots of noise, even the cabmen all knew regarding it. Think, now! Shapkin the professional managed my divorce on behalf of me, the rascal . . . the infamous card player, the man UN agency got a thrashing at the club. . . ."

"Ivan Nikolaitch?"

"Yes, yes. . . . Well, is he alive? Is he dead?"

"Alive, sir, thank God. he's a functionary currently associated has an workplace. he's okay off. He has 2 homes in Kirpitchny Street. . . . His female offspring was married the opposite day."

Uzelkov paced up and down the area, thought a small amount, and in his tedium created up his mind to travel and see Shapkin at his workplace. once he walked out of the edifice and sauntered slowly towards Kirpitchny Street it absolutely was noontide. He found Shapkin at his workplace and scarcely recognized him. From the once superior, adroit professional with a mobile, insolent, and continuously sottish face Shapkin had become a modest, white-haired, decrepit recent man.

"You don't acknowledge Maine, you have got forgotten Maine," began Uzelkov. "I am your recent shopper, Uzelkov."

"Uzelkov, what Uzelkov? Ah!" Shapkin remembered, recognized, and was smitten all of a heap. There followed a shower of exclamations, questions, recollections.

"This may be a surprise! this can be unexpected!" cackled Shapkin. "What am i able to provide you? does one take care of champagne? maybe you'd like oysters? My expensive fellow, i've got had such a lot from you in my time that I can't give you something capable the occasion. . . ."

"Please don't place yourself out . . ." aforementioned Uzelkov. "I don't have any time to spare. i have to go without delay to the site and examine the church; i've got undertaken the restoration of it."

"That's capital! We'll have a snack and a drink and drive along. i've got capital horses. I'll take you there and introduce you to the church-warden; i'll prepare it all. . . . however why is it, my angel, you appear to be frightened of Maine and hold me at arm's length? Sit a bit nearer! there's no would like for you to be afraid of me these days. He-he! . . . At just one occasion, it is true, i used to be a crafty blade, a dog of a fellow . . . nobody dared approach me; however currently i'm stiller than water and humbler than the grass. i've got adult recent, i'm a married man, i've got youngsters. It's time i used to be dead."

The friends had lunch, had a drink, and with a try of horses drove out of the city to the site.

"Yes, those were times!" Shapkin recalled as he Saturday within the sledge. "When you bear in mind them you just can't believe them. does one bear in mind however you unmarried  your wife? It's nearly twenty years agone, and that i dare say you have got forgotten it all; however I commit it to memory like I'd unmarried  you yesterday. Good Lord, what lots of worry I had over it! i used to be a pointy fellow, difficult and crafty, a desperate character. . . . typically i used to be burning to tackle some difficult  business, particularly if the fee were a decent one, as, for example, in your case. What did you pay Maine then? 5 or six thousand! That was price taking bother for, wasn't it? You went off to Petersburg Campaign and left the entire factor in my hands to try to to the simplest I might, and, although Sofya Mihailovna, your wife, came solely of a merchandiser family, she was proud and dignified. To bribe her to require the guilt on herself was troublesome, awfully difficult! i might head to talk over along with her, and as before long as she saw Maine she known as to her maid: 'Masha, didn't I tell you to not admit that scoundrel?' Well, i attempted one factor and another. . . . I wrote her letters and contrived to satisfy her accidentally—it was no use! I had to act through a 3rd person. I had lots of bother along with her for an extended time, and she or he solely gave in once you united to offer her 10 thousand. . . . She couldn't resist 10 thousand, she couldn't hold out. . . . She cried, she spat in my face, however she consented, she took the guilt on herself!"

"I thought it absolutely was fifteen thousand she had from Maine, not ten," aforementioned
Uzelkov.
"Yes, yes . . . fifteen—I created a slip," aforementioned Shapkin in confusion. "It's everywhere and through with, though, it's no use concealing it. I gave her 10 and also the different 5 I collared for myself. I deceived you each. . . . It's everywhere and through with, it's no use to be embarrassed. And indeed, choose for yourself, Boris Petrovitch, weren't you the terribly person on behalf of me to urge cash out of? . . . You were a rich person and had everything you needed. . . . Your wedding was associate idle whim, and then was your divorce. You were creating lots of cash. . . . I bear in mind you created a scoop of twenty thousand over one contract. Whom ought to i've got fleeced if not you? and that i should own I envied you. If you grabbed something they took off their caps to you, whereas they might thrash Maine for a ruble and slap me within the face at the club. . . . But there, why recall it? it's time to forget it."

"Tell Maine, please, however did Sofya Mihailovna get on afterwards?"

"With her 10 thousand? terribly badly. God is aware of what it was—she lost her head, perhaps, or even her pride and her conscience tormented her at having sold  her honour, or maybe she loved  you; however, does one apprehend, she took to drink. . . . As before long as she got her cash she was off driving regarding with officers. it absolutely was drunkenness, dissipation, debauchery. . . . once she visited a eating house with officers she wasn't content with port or something lightweight, she should have sturdy hard drink, fiery stuff to stupefy her."

"Yes, she was eccentric. . . . I had lots to place up with from her . . . typically she would take offence at one thing and start being hysterical. . . . And what happened afterwards?"

"One week passed then another. . . . i used to be sitting reception, writing one thing. All without delay the door opened and she or he walked in . . . drunk. 'Take back your cursed cash,' she aforementioned, and flung a roll of notes in my face. . . . therefore she couldn't keep it up. I picked up the notes and counted them. it absolutely was 5 hundred in need of the 10 thousand, therefore she had solely managed to urge through 5 hundred."

"Where did you set the money?"

"It's all ancient history . . . there's no reason to hide it currently. . . . In my pocket, of course. Why does one take a look at Maine like that? Wait a small amount for what is going to come back later. . . . It's an everyday novel, a pathological study. a pair of months later i used to be going home one night in an exceedingly nasty sottish condition. . . . I lighted a candle, and lo and behold! Sofya Mihailovna was sitting on my couch, and she or he was drunk, too, and in an exceedingly frantic state—as wild like she had run out of Bedlam. 'Give Maine back my cash,' she aforementioned, 'I have modified my mind; if i have to head to ruin I won't bed by halves, I'll have my fling! Be fast, you persona non grata, offer Maine my money!' A disgraceful scene!"
